As 2026 comes into full swing, you may have set some resolutions you want to stick to this year. A popular one that people make is to work out more, but did you know you may inadvertently be harming your smile? It’s not exercising that does it, but rather certain habits you do during it that can cause trouble. Here’s what you need to know and how you can make sure your grin stays strong.
How Can Exercising Harm My Smile?
Working out isn’t what’s bad for your oral health. In fact, it can get your heart pumping while also reducing your risk of gum disease. However, certain habits may cause harm, such as:
- Breathing Through Your Mouth: Intense physical activity can make you breathe heavily and faster. You may do it through your mouth, but this can reduce saliva production. You may not be able to rinse harmful bacteria away as easily.
- Clenching Your Teeth: Strength training and other hard exercises may make you clench to get through them. This puts excess pressure on your teeth, leading to jaw pain or increased wear over time.
- Having Sports Drinks: Hydrating is important, so these beverages can replenish your electrolytes, but they are acidic and usually full of sugar. You may increase your risk of oral health issues like decay or gum disease the more you drink them.
What Can I Do to Protect My Smile When Exercising?
The good news is that everything above can be prevented by building the right routine while you exercise. Here are simple tips to make sure your smile isn’t compromised while you improve your overall health:
- Do breathing exercises and make a conscious effort to breathe through your nose. You might even increase your lung capacity and lower your blood pressure as well.
- Drink water as it’s hydrating and washes away bacteria and debris. Coconut water is a great alternative as well.
- Wear a mouthguard when lifting or at a risk of facial blows, especially when you think you might clench your teeth.
- Brush twice and floss once every day to remove plaque that can lead to dental problems.
While the points above are great things you can do at home and while working out, it’s also important that you visit your dentist as well. They will be able to ensure that your teeth are in great shape and offer advice to improve your oral hygiene routine. That way, you can exercise and keep the strong smile you deserve.
